The Mind Behind the Work

Shaping a thoughtful, student-centered advising experience

A Journey Into College Admissions

Crys Latham, The College Fairy

It was this text message from a former student starting their first year at college that led Crys Latham to becoming “The College Fairy” to the students with whom she worked both in and outside of her school community. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her counseling practice. While many in the profession may spend their career working on one "side of the desk" or the other, Crys has amassed nearly 30 years of working both in college admissions and college counseling, giving her a unique perspective to share with families on both preparation and outcomes.

Growing up as a first-generation-to-college, low-income student, Crys understands deeply the significant gaps in understanding how to navigate the college application process that continue to exist. Despite these challenges, her journey led her to Mount Holyoke College, where her transformative undergraduate experience and her work in the admissions office set the foundation for a long-standing career in college admissions and counseling. Crys drew from her 12 years of admissions experience to create and grow the college counseling program at Washington Latin Public Charter School in Washington, D.C. where she spent 15 years successfully guiding over 1,000 alumni through their post-secondary journey.

Commitment to Student Empowerment

Growing up in a low-income family, Crys took the initiative to learn how to manage finances, knowledge she wished had been more accessible earlier in her own education. This experience led her to develop a comprehensive financial literacy curriculum for her students, giving them a practical head start she never had. The curriculum later became a graduation requirement for all students at Washington Latin Public Charter School.

Creating Clarity Through Preparation

To support students more effectively, Crys developed a two-course curriculum, one designed to prepare juniors for the college application process and another to support seniors as they completed their first applications. These programs provided structure, clarity, and early preparation for students navigating an often complex process.
